A few wines over Christmas
Javillier Meursault "Les Tillets" 2002
Quite evolved on the nose, tropical fruit, lemon. Concentrated, flavourfull palate, a certain fatness, not quite the structure I expected, nervous in character, but certainly not flat or flabby, but the middle sort of "hangs there". Very nice finish.
Dagueneau "Silex" 2000
Easily the best dry White ever, Sauvignon Blanc or otherwise. Fabulous complex nose, without any greenness or catpiss-like things. Big mouthfull of a perfect combination of mature fruits and a steel-core. Finishes Looong.
Leoville Las Cases 1993
Not as good as 1991, and definitely at peak and probably sliding a bit. Nice nose, but lacks intensity. Blood and iron, big time on the palate, medium body, lacks a bit concentration but sufficient power to be interesting. Medium finish.
Guigal d`Ampuis 1998
Not much on the nose, needed a lot of air to shows signs of spice, dairy, and black fruits. Fairly big in the mouth, but way too woody yet. Showed hints of character, signs of things to come but by no means a great wine at this stage. Easy on the wood please...
Jaboulet Crozes-Hermitage " Thalabert" 1990
Incredible nose. Reminds me of mature top-Bordeaux, makes it worth the price alone. Complex, deep, ever so spicy and "spins" in every direction, changing. The palate could not quite follow, no surprise as it would have been the greatest wine ever made :) , but very satisfying, good concentration, complex . Long finish. At peak as I see it, and should be consumed in the very near future.Great wine, too bad they don`t make them like this anymore.
L. Pira Barolo 2000
Quicknote: Correct in every way but somewhat boring, could probably use some time in bottle, but a decent, fairly-priced wine
There you have it, and BTW a Happy New Year to all, and may your glasses be filled with great wine in the days to come..
